How to identify autism in children?

Autism is neurodevelopmental disorder where the child has poor social interaction and communication. The term “spectrum” in autism spectrum disorder(ASD) refers to the wide range of symptoms and severity on case to case basis.

Speech delay is commonly associated with autism. Many children brought with speech delay have features of autism.

It commonly starts in early childhood(less than 3 yrs). Early identification is the key because young immature brain responds better to early intervention.

Consult with pediatric neurologist if the child has following symptoms:

  1. Doesn’t respond with a smile by 6 months
  2. No eye contact or impersistant eye contact by 4-6 months
  3. Doesn’t mimic sounds or facial expressions by 9 months
  4. Not speaking single syllable by 12 months
  5. No gesture, such as point or wave, by 14 months
  6. No pretend play or imaginative play by 18 months
  7. Doesn’t say two-word phrases by 24 months
  8. Loses language skills or social skills at any age
  9. Prefers to play alone
  10. No social interaction and poor communication skill
  11. Has repetitive behavior and fixed interest

Autism can be treated with multidisciplinary intervention. The long term outcome depends upon early identification, underlying etiology and severity of symptoms. Never hesitate to take expert opinion. Earlier, the better.
