How to reduce chances of having seizure in my child?
Your child might be on medicines for control of seizure. But if we follow some basics, the chances of seizure control is even better.
Following are some common tips to follow.
- Take your medicines exactly as directed by pediatric neurologist– at the right times, and at the right doses. Skipping a single dose can increase risk for seizure recurrence.
- Tell your doctor about any side effects if any. Don’t stop medicines by your own.
- Be careful not to let your prescription run out.Stopping anti-seizure medicine suddenly can put the child at risk of seizures.
- While on anti-seizure medicines, check with your doctor before starting any new medicines. Anti-seizure medicines can interact with other medicines, and with herbal drugs. Mixing them can increase side effects or make them not work as well.
- Ensure the child sleeps adequately (at least 7-8hrs). Sleep deprivation can precipitate seizure in children with epilepsy.
- Follow up routinely in clinic as advised by pediatric neurologist for adjustment of doses.Because as child gains weight, doses may need modification.
- Dont let the child watch mobile, TV, laptop etc continuously. Also avoid any blinking lights. Many of the epilepsies are photosensitive. Blinking lights and prolong screen time can precipitate seizure.
- Always keep intranasal midazolam nearby. Give appropriate doses as advised by pediatric neurologist if there are any major prolong seizure.
